Meet Shawna

In 1996, Shawna Heiser founded Special Learning 1-ON-1 LLC, which has since expanded to provide services to children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of special needs. Her clinical expertise focuses on supporting families of children and adolescents with behavioral, communication, and developmental challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and related conditions.

Shawna currently consults with multiple school districts and early childhood intervention programs across the state, while maintaining a private behavioral counseling practice. In her private practice, she collaborates closely with a Speech and Language Therapist and an Occupational Therapist, providing a multidisciplinary approach to individualized care.

In 2009, Shawna Heiser became the fourth individual in Montana to receive national certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). She received mentorship and training from five leading researchers in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder and is recognized as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in the state of Montana. Her professional background includes specialized training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intensive programs, L.E.A.P. Project, Greenspan/Floortime, Pivotal Response Training (PRT), and C-BAM assessment scales, supporting evidence-based interventions across a range of developmental and behavioral needs.

After establishing her business, Shawna Heiser returned to Montana State University–Bozeman in 2002 to share her professional experience and expertise with Psychology students as a Senior Lecturer. She teaches a range of junior- and senior-level courses, including Behavior Modification, Psychology of Learning, Advanced Behavior Analysis, and Field Practicum/Internship. Her guiding philosophy in working with families is: “Every Person Deserves an Opportunity for Independence.”
